In Majawa and surrounding villages, early marriages and pregnancies have been significant barriers to girls' education and future aspirations. However, the establishment of Namabvi Girls’ Camp (60 teen girls) at Namabvi Primary School, under the leadership of GVH Nkata in Traditional Authority Chowe, Mangochi District, has become a beacon of hope for young girls in the area.
Launched by YODEP, the Namabvi Girls' Camp provides a safe and supportive environment where girls meet weekly to openly discuss the challenges they face in their daily lives. These meetings cover a wide range of topics, from the pressures of early marriage to the risks of early pregnancy, while offering guidance on education, personal growth, and decision-making.
Through these weekly discussions, girls have gained the confidence to voice their concerns and seek solutions, breaking the silence surrounding issues that often lead to early marriages and pregnancies.
The camp has become a powerful tool for community transformation. By addressing cultural and societal norms that contribute to early marriages, the camp is helping to shift mindsets among girls and their families.
Many girls now understand the importance of staying in school and delaying marriage until they are emotionally and physically prepared. They are learning about their rights, how to stand up for themselves, and how to seek support when needed.
One of the most remarkable successes of the Namabvi Girls' Camp is the reduction in early marriages and pregnancies in the area. The camp has not only provided mentorship and peer support but also connected girls with role models—educated women who share their stories of overcoming similar challenges. Many girls who once considered marriage as their only option are now pursuing their education with renewed determination.
