Beatrice Samuti, a 24-year-old mother of two from Namwala 1 village in GVH Kadewere, has always relied on her large farm near the Likangala River to sustain her family of four. During good seasons, her hard work and determination would yield 10 to 16 bags of maize, ensuring food security and a steady income for her household. However, the devastating El Niño rain this year brought her dreams to a halt.
The drought dried up most of her crops, leaving her with just 3.5 bags of maize. It was a heartbreaking blow, as Beatrice faced the harsh reality of food insecurity and the challenge of rebuilding her livelihood.
Then, hope arrived through the ๐๐๐ป๐ด๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐๐ฝ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฒ ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ท๐ฒ๐ฐ๐, implemented by YODEP in partnership with Save the Children Malawi. Beatrice received financial assistance totaling K312,000.00—K180,000.00 for food and K132,000.00 for farm inputs.
With this support, Beatrice made a life-changing decision to rent a garden for irrigation farming. She reinvested in her future by purchasing a 50kg bag of fertilizer and planting maize again. Her efforts have paid off. Today, her crops are thriving, and her garden is a symbol of resilience and determination.
“I am truly grateful to YODEP and Save the Children for their generous support,” she shared with a smile. “Without their help, I would not have been able to keep going. I believe this year’s harvest will be much better, and the proceeds will greatly improve my family’s life.”
Thanks to the Hunger Response Project, Beatrice is not just surviving she is rebuilding her life with confidence. Her story is a testament to how timely support and determination can turn challenges into opportunities, empowering families to rise above adversity
